September's input-cost jump raises the bar on backlog quality
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics says its index for inputs to stage 4 construction producers rose 2.0 percent in September and 11.0 percent over the prior year. Within that index, energy inputs rose 18.5 percent in September and 78.3 percent over the year.
This is national producer-price evidence, not a Texas bid-price index or a forecast that every contractor's costs will move by the same amount. It does, however, make the quality of booked work more important: a full backlog is less reassuring when major input exposures remain open.
For Texas construction owners and advisers, the immediate question is how much of the September increase is already protected in supplier quotes, subcontract commitments, escalation terms and working-capital plans. The practical move is to test that exposure contract by contract before treating backlog as proof of margin.

- Energy, data centers and project delivery — ERCOT Eligibility Verification RFI — Load Type C and D — Question Reference Guide — ERCOT, October 13, 2026. In its Load Type C and D question guide, ERCOT's site-readiness verification asks for current development activity, aerial imagery, a dated site plan, the construction schedule through requested energization, and financial-commitment information—useful diligence for distinguishing documented project progress from a pipeline assertion.
What to Watch
