Import-price detail widens the cost check beyond energy

The September import-price release adds a nonfuel cross-check to yesterday's construction-input warning. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics says prices for imported nonfuel industrial supplies and materials rose 1.4 percent in September after a 1.3 percent increase in August. BLS says higher prices for finished metal shapes, finished nonmetals including glass, and agricultural products used as industrial supplies and materials drove the September increase.

This is national import-price evidence, not a Texas contractor cost index. It does not show how much of a particular project depends on imports or how a supplier will price a future order.

For Texas construction owners and advisers, the bounded implication is that the contract-level review should not stop with energy. Open buyouts involving imported finished metals or glass deserve a fresh check against current quotes, contingencies and working-capital assumptions before backlog is treated as protected margin.

Worth Your Time

  • Energy, data centers and project delivery — LLWG Meeting — ERCOT, October 15, 2026. The public agenda grouped NERC activity, data-center responses to a recent large-load event, large-load curtailment risk and load-sponsored generation; it is a useful map of the operating questions around large-load delivery, not evidence that ERCOT adopted a new rule or reached a project decision.

What to Watch

  • Contractor finance and margin: Whether October producer and import-price data extend September's increase or show that it was temporary.
  • Workforce, subcontractors and capacity: The September state employment release scheduled for October 20, which may supply a current Texas construction-workforce reading.
